Learning Goal 12
Learning Goal 12: I can determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in atoms when given atom symbols, illustrations, of basic atom models, and/or a periodic table.
Learning Criteria
1. I can distinguish between neutral atoms, cations, and anions.
For example, I can verbally and in writing explain that a cation is an atom that has lost electrons resulting in a positively charged ion containing more positively charged protons than electrons.
2. I can use an atom symbol to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom.
For example: If I was given the following atom symbol:
For example, I can verbally and in writing explain that a cation is an atom that has lost electrons resulting in a positively charged ion containing more positively charged protons than electrons.
2. I can use an atom symbol to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom.
For example: If I was given the following atom symbol:
I would be able to determine that there are 4 protons, 5 neutrons, and 2 electrons in the atom.
3. I can use a periodic table to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in atom.
For example: If I was asked to use the periodic table to determine the protons, neutrons, and electrons for the element oxygen,
For example: If I was asked to use the periodic table to determine the protons, neutrons, and electrons for the element oxygen,
I would be able to determine that there are 8 protons, 8 neutrons, and 8 electrons.
