Learning Goal 3
Learning Goal 3: I can describe the differences between physical and chemical changes of matter.
Learning Criteria
1. I have memorized and can verbally describe and write out the definitions of the following terms: particle, atom, physical change, chemical change, state change, precipitate.
For example: Given the term "chemical change", I am able to say and write "A change that occurs when a new substance is formed".
2. I have memorized and can classify a list of changes in matter as physical or chemical changes.
For example: Given the change "melting", I am able to classify melting as a physical change.
3. I can describe the difference between physical and chemical changes based upon changes in particle structure and arrangement.
For example: I am able to explain that "chemical changes" occur when the atoms in particles are rearranged to form new particles.
4. I have memorized and can use indicators of physical and chemical change to determine whether observed changes in matter are physical or chemical.
For example: I observe that gas bubbles are formed and the temperature increases when two substances are combined. I conclude that a chemical change has occurred because "production of gas" and "change in temperature" are two of the indicators of chemical change.
