Learning Goal 5
Learning Goal 5: I can evaluate the accuracy and precision of a measurement.
Learning Criteria
1. I have memorized and can verbally describe and write out the definitions of the following terms: accuracy, precision, percent error.
For example: Given the term "accuracy", I am able to say and write "The accuracy of a measurement indicates how close the measurement is to the correct answer".
2. I can determine the accuracy and precision of a set of measurements.
For example: I am able to characterize the following set of data as "precise, but not accurate". The data is precise because the measurements are all close to one another. The data is not accurate, because the measurements are not close to the accepted value.
Accepted Value: 3.21 mL
Measurements: 4.22 mL, 4.21 mL, 4.20 mL, 4.21 mL
3. I can calculate the percent error of a measurement when given the accepted value.
For example: Given the following information, I can calculate the percent error of a measurement as shown below.
Accepted Value: 5.23 g
Measured Value: 5.00 g
% error = |Accepted value - Measured value| x 100 = |5.23 g - 5.00 g| x 100 = 4.40 %
Accepted value 5.23
