Learning Goal 8L
Learning Goal 8L: I can make measurements to the correct number of significant figures.
Learning Criteria
1. I can use examples to describe the relationship between the number of gradients on a measuring device and the precision of the measuring device.
For example: A graduated cylinder has more gradients than a beaker. This means that the graduated cylinder is a more precise measuring device than the beaker.
2. I can correctly measure the mass, length, and volume of a substance to the correct number of significant figures by measuring all of the "known" digits plus one "guess" digit.
For example: The correct measurement of the object shown below is 1.25 cm. The numbers "1" and "2" are the "known" digits. The number "5" is the digit that must be "guessed.

3. I can correctly measure the mass, length, and volume of a substance to the correct number of significant figures when the measurement appears to land on a line.
For example: The correct measurement for the object shown below is 30.0. The digits in the number "30" are the "known digits". Because the object appears to land on the line, the "guess" digit is a "0". Therefore, I would record the measurement as 30.0 - NOT 30.
