Welcome to chemistry! My name is Shari Kendrick and I'll be teaching all On-Level Chemistry this year. I am married with two children, two dogs, and two cats. My daughter is 23 and is currently attending San Antonio College. My son is 18 and a graduate of Smithson Valley High School. He will also be attending San Antonio College this year.
I didn't start out in life as a "chemistry" person. When I was in college, I was all about molecular biology and genetics. My first Bachelor's degree was a BS in Zoology from UT Austin - I originally picked Zoology because it was the only science degree that would let me take Latin as my foreign language - I had taken Latin in high school and didn't want to have to learn a new language! As it turned out, the Zoology department was where all the cool genetic stuff was happening anyways.
About the time I was halfway through my senior year in college, I started wondering "hmm, what does a person actually do with a zoology degree anyways?" Well, it turns out, you go to school for a few more years! So, I spent another year and a half at the UT Health Science Center in Houston where I finished a BS in Medical Technology with a graduate certificate in cytogenetics (chromosomes!).
I spent the next fifteen years working for Christus Santa Rosa as a cytogeneticist - I analyzed people's chromosomes to help diagnose congenital abnormalities and childhood leukemias. After fifteen years, I started to get bored and decided to become a teacher. I worked for six years at McCollum High School in San Antonio where I taught IPC, On-Level Chemistry, PAP Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. Before coming to Champion, I took a year off and finished my M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. This will be my sixth year teaching On-Level chemistry at Champion High School. (:
